Basin Electric Cooperative awarded Horizons, Inc. Aerial Photography and LIDAR Mapping contract

05 Jul 2006

Rapid City, SD (July 2006) Basin Electric Power Cooperative, a consumer-owned, regional electric generation and transmission (G&T) cooperative located in Bismarck, North Dakota, selected Horizons, Inc., to provide photogrammetric services along a 135.5 mile corridor referred to as the Hughes Transmission Line. Aerial photography, LiDAR data and orthophotographic mapping will serve as a base map for the design and construction of the 230-kilovolt (kV) transmission line in Campbell and Sheridan Counties in northeastern Wyoming.

Due to increased rural growth and energy demand in the area, the construction of the Hughes Transmission Line is essential for Basin Electric to continue providing low-cost electricity to more than 1.8 million consumers. The line will connect the Hughes substation, north of Rozet, to the Carr Draw substation, west of Gillette, and a proposed substation north of Sheridan, strengthening the existing transmission system.

“The Hughes Transmission Line project requires high accuracy mapping because of its complexity and also because of the impact it will have on so many people,” said Larry Deibert, President and General Manager of Horizons. “Having worked with Basin Electric in the past, and with four regional power cooperatives on similar mapping projects over the past year and-one-half, we understand the Cooperative’s objectives and quality expectations.”

The award signified a competitive victory for Horizons and will serve to expand their expertise in corridor mapping applications in the Midwest region.
